BBBP awareness programme held at Kakching

Kakching, February 24 2025:
The District Administration Kakching, in collaboration with the District Programme Officer (DPO), ICDS Cell, Kakching, organized an awareness programme and plantation drive as part of the 10 years celebration of "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" (BBBP) scheme at Pangantabi Makha Leikai Community Hall today.
The programme aimed to raise awareness on gender equality, protection and education of the girl child and the legal provisions under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC-PNDT) Act, 1994 to curb sex-selection.
The programme was attended by Dr Thaodem Rajen Singh, CMO Kakching as chief guest, Ningthoujam Parango Singh, DPO/CDPO, Kakching as President, Moirangthem Amubi Devi as guest of honour and Wairokpam Hemabati, District Public Health Nursing Officer, Kakching as resource person.
Wairokpam Hemabati, District Public Health Nursing Officer, Kakching spoke on PC- PNDT Act, 1994 which bans sex selection before or after conception.
She explained how the Act regulates pre-natal diagnostic techniques to detect genetic and metabolic disorders, chromosomal abnormalities and congenital malformations and to prevent sex determination leading to female foeticide.
Moirangthem Bimola, Supervisor spoke about Skill Development and awareness convergence with the Department of Skill development and Entrepreneurship, stressing the importance of vocational training for self-reliance.
Nandita Ngangbam, in her keynote address, explained the objectives of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme, which is an initiative of the Ministry of Women and Child Development that focuses on preventing gender-biased sex selection, ensuring the survival and protection of the girl child, promoting education and empowerment.
A total of 160 participants, including adolescent girls, participated in the awareness programme and gift items were distributed to 78 adolescent girls.
As a part of the programme, a tree plantation drive was conducted by the officials at Pangantabi Makha Leikai.
