The first foundation day of United Women's Front (UWF) was celebrated today at Manipur Press Club here along with announcing the activities to be taken up by the women's body in 2008-09. Education Minister L Jayantakumar, UWF president in-charge Kh Mangi Leima and vice president of All Manipur Lady Advocates' Association L Kiranmala Leima graced the first anniversary function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Giving the key note address of the function, UWF secretary general Kh Rani Leima observed that the Front was established on February 24, 2007 taking recognisance of the united efforts that women need to take up in the Manipuri society today in view of the various problems afflicting the State.
Besides, looking after their own children at home, women need to come out and contribute their mite in the society, she said.
Stating that the ongoing armed conflict in the State has caused lot of difficulties to its people, Rani Leima observed that the black laws being imposed on the pretext of subduing insurgency movement have posed a threat on the very survival of the common people.
In order to subdue the movement of the people, various judicial inquiries have been instituted in the past, but the reports of any of these inquiries have not been made known to the people till date.
None of the culprits have been booked or punished.
So it is high time for all the Manipuri women to decide what stand they should take in this regard, she said, adding that it is the hoped of he United Women's Front that more and more brave and courageous women would come out to face these challenges.
As in the first year of its establishment, the Front would continue with its good works for the cause of the people like promotion of work culture, development of the education system so as to produce good students among others, Rani Leima announced.
Along with these tasks, the Front would also taking up various awareness campaign on human rights from the nest year and pay special attention to improvement of the health care delivery system in the State, Rani Leima said, adding that the Front would always work along with the co-operation of the people on any important issue of the State.
Appreciating the courage of Irom Chanu Sharmila who has been fighting against prolonged imposition of Armed Forces Special Powers Act in the State for the last many years, her mother Shakhi Leima was also honoured during the today's function.
Other personalities who were honoured at the occasion include vice president of AMADA Mayai Loishang M Padamini Leima, Seram Anjali Chanu of KEDO and Dangmei Asalta Kabui.
Earlier delivering his address as chief guest of the function, Minister L Jayantakumar pointed out that every persons have a role to play in the society.
That also should be the foundation of a good society, and for setting up a good society we need good parents.
