PUYA blames negligent doctors for death of expecting mother

Imphal, September 18 2026: Doctors who were supposed to join Sugnu Sub-District Hospital on July 22 "have not yet joined and reported for duty" .

This was found today by the People's United Youth Alliance (PUYA), which has alleged that the doctors' presence in the hospital could have saved the lives of a mother and child yesterday.

PUYA secretary general Longjam Abothe Meitei said members of the organisation visited the hospital today.

Following an earlier inspection conducted at the hospital on July 20, the Government had ordered the posting of a Paediatric doctor and a Gynaecologist on July 22 .

However, nearly a month after, both the doctors have not yet joined the hospital, Abothe said.

If the doctors were present yesterday, the lives of an expecting mother and her child could have been saved, Abothe said.

A resident of Sugnu, Khaidem ongbi Malemnganbi was brought to the hospital yesterday expecting delivery of her child.

With no doctors available at the hospital, she was referred to another hospital.

The expecting mother however died on the way, resulting in the loss of two precious lives, Abothe said, demanding strict action against the doctors who have not yet joined the hospital for duty.

While the Sugnu hospital is lacking required infrastructure, Abothe further said that the relevant authorities of the Government have not yet taken actions against earlier complaints of the PUYA which had flagged the use of a substitute doctor and unavailability of ultrasound machine at the hospital.

The Government must without fail look into the operations of the hospitals and healthcare centres in rural areas.

While providing the manpower and equipment needed at the healthcare centres, the Government must take strict action against erring doctors and nurses who have failed the public, Abothe said.
