Imphal, June 17 2025:
Lamsang Assembly Constituency MLA Sorokhaibam Rajen carried out an inspection of Sekmai dam which was damaged by floods last year and remains unrepaired till date.
Notably, the MLA was furious as no officials from the Minor Irrigation Department showed up despite being invited by the MLA to join the inspection visit.
Last year, the floods had damaged a portion of the Sekmai dam, built by the Minor Irrigation Department, along with its side canal.
As the dam continues to remain in disrepair, the fate of paddyfields in nine villages of Sekmai and Heingang AC which were previously irrigated by the Sekmai dam canal hangs in the balance.
Today MLA S Rajen was accompanied by representatives of the nine affected villages in inspecting the condition of Sekmai dam and its side canal.
According to the MLA, farmers of the nine villages are worried as it would be nearly impossible to till and cultivate the paddyfields in the absence of irrigation water previously supplied by the Sekmai dam.
He alleged that the dam, which cost crores to build, was damaged due to lack of quality control during its construction.
He further alleged that the Minor Irrigation Department dug tubewells in 3/ 4 areas of Lamsang AC and then stopped despite assuring that more tubewells would be dug in the region.
Investigations to discover who issued the work order and which contractors were involved have not borne any results, he added.
MLA S Rajen has urged the.
Governor to conduct an enquiry into the matter and take strict action against the responsible officials.
He also assured to submit a memorandum to the Governor concerning the present condition of the Sekmai dam.
