Master plan to combat floods in the offing

A master plan to combat floods in the State is being prepared and it is likely to be completed by November 2024, according to Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai.
Replying to a query raised by MLA Thangjam Arunkumar during question hour in the State Assembly today, Awangbow said that the Government has been considering to identify vulnerable areas and do the needful with assistance from the Centre as per the master plan.
Old retaining walls of not only Imphal River but also of other rivers must be removed in order to build stronger retaining walls.
The Government is looking into this matter, Awangbow said.
Replying to a query raised by MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan, RD&PR Minister Y Khemchand said that construction of bridge over Iril River at Top Mayai Leikai has been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the violent crisis and he river's high water level.
Khemchand further informed the House that Rs 558.68 lakh has been released so far for construction of the bridge.
Nonetheless, a show cause notice has been served on the contractor concerned for delaying the bridge construction work and the contractor has been slapped a fine of 1 per cent of the agreement amount, Khemchand said.
Saying that components of the bridge are yet to arrive from Guwahati, the RD&PR Minister assured that the bridge would be completed by December 2024 at the latest.
Responding to a question raised by K Leishiyo, Chief Minister N Biren stated that Kamjong occupies fourth position among the 16 districts of Manipur in terms of collection of GST, Forest revenue, land revenue, hill house tax, payment of professional tax and hills house tax.
The Forest Department collected a revenue of Rs 7.82 crore in 2022-23 and Rs 18.64 crore in 2023-24, Biren said.
To another query of K Leishiyo, Education Minister Th Basantakumar said that the construction work of DIET Centre at Kasom Khullen sub-divisional headquarters would be completed by December 2024 .
