Police's helmet drive yields Rs 1.40 lakh

Traffic Control Police and Manipur Police together with Motor Vehicle officials continued with their drive to crack down on riders who don't use protective headgears.
Motor Vehicles Inspector Th Dinachandra in press meet held at the State Transport Department Office today said Commissioner of Transport M Lakshmikumar on July 25, issued an order necessitating all two wheeler riders to wear protective headgears (helmets) which conform to the BIS standard.
The Commissioner directed Motor Vehicle officials to conduct a drive to check if all the riders are following the order 30 days after it was issued.

The first drive was held on September 3 wherein the police booked as many as 104 riders without helmets.
Up till now, police have booked 700 violators and collected Rs 1.40 lakh as fine for violating traffic rules.
About 150 of the cases were fined not just for driving without a headgear, but also for not having a uniform number plate, Dinachandra stated.
"The drive is not held merely to collect fines from drivers.
It is a step to spread awareness on traffic rules among the drivers/riders," he stated.
In the meantime, Diesel Auto rickshaw drivers have been asked to quit extending the front seats of the vehicles to accommodate more passengers.
A directive on the matter has been sent to auto rickshaw associations and societies on July 30, he said.
The drive taken out by the Motor vehicle Department Task Force collects Rs 200 from two wheeler riders who don't wear helmets.
If they commit the same offence for the second time, they would be fined Rs 400 and stringent punitive action would be taken up if they commit the same offence for the third time or more.
