Go plastic free call issued

The Department of Environmental Science, Dhanamanjuri University observed World Environment Day at its premises in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change under the theme "Ending plastic pollution globally" today.
Speaking as the chief guest, Professor W Chandbabu, Vice Chancellor, DMU highlighted the effects of climate change and stressed that efforts to save the environment should be carried out throughout the year, not just in the month of June.
The Government and academic institutions should take the lead in spreading environmental awareness.
He pointed out the disposal of plastic wastes in drains, rivers etc and maintained that a State policy along with public cooperation is necessary to combat this menace.
Absence of proper garbage disposal can affect public health and lead to degradation of the ecosystem, remarked the DMU VC.
Meanwhile, Dr T Brajakumar, Director, Directorate of Environment & Climate Change emphasized the growing consumption of plastic items with growing development.
Considering this, he said that people should curb the use of plastic as much as possible.
The event was graced by Professor Ksh Birbal Singh as the functional president and Professor N Rajmuhon, former VC, DMU and Professor Koijam KK Mani Bhushan, Head (PG), Department of Environmental Science DM College of Science as the guests of honour.
The ceremony was followed by the planting of State tree 'U-Ningthou' in the campus.
Cloth bags made from scrap fabrics were also distributed by Self-Help Group Kangleipak Women Multipurpose Cooperative Society, Kshetrigao.
