Imphal, November 08, 2008:
Local people of Thangmeiband including its MLA Radhabinod Koijam staged a protest sitting today against the Government's move to expand Watham Leirak and develop as a district connecting road.
Talking to media persons at the protest venue, one protester said that the Imphal West DC has not only issued a notice for expansion of Watham Leirak from the existing width of 24 feet to 30 metres but also has fixed November 20 for a final hearing on the matter.
Confiding that the people have objection if the Government wishes to expand the road to a permissible limit, he observed that should the Government go ahead with its move to expand the road to 30 metres, many families would be left without any homestead.
Questioning the non-uniformity in road expansion initiative, the protesters disclosed that the Government has reportedly agreed to expand the much more congested RIMS road to only 20 metres and the Thangmeiband main road to 25 metres.
Watham Leirak has already been expanded twice following construction of Langol Housing Complex and Games Village for the fifth National Games held in the State.
However, the affected land owners have not been compensated yet, they conveyed.
