Tezpur University gets Centre of Excellence tag

Imphal, October 06 2026: Prof Thokchom Chandramani Singh, Dean, Directorate of Regional Indian Languages & Research, Manipur International University and Convenor, Classical Manipuri Language Promotion Board, has welcomed the Union Ministry of Education's decision dated October 1, 2026 designating Tezpur University as Centre of Excellence for Classical Assamese, along with centres for Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit.

He congratulated Pro VC Prof Amarendra Kr Das and Tezpur University for digitising 4000 old Assamese manuscripts since 2011, terming it historic, two years after Assamese got classical status on October 3, 2024 .

He appealed to the Ministry to consider a similar Centre for Classical Manipuri at Manipur International University to preserve ancient Puyas and classical literature.
