Imphal, June 05 2026: Manipur University celebrated its 46th foundation-cum commendation day with great enthusiasm and solemnity at the Court Hall of the University on Friday.

The event commemorated the University's remarkable journey since its establishment and honoured faculty members and staff for their outstanding achievements and dedicated service.

Established on June 5, 1980 under the Manipur University Act, 1980, with only ten postgraduate departments, Manipur University has grown into one of the premier institutions of higher education in the region, according to a statement issued by the university's PRO Dr Sakila Nongmeikapam.

The University attained the status of a Central University on October 13, 2005 and currently comprises 9 Schools of Studies, 47 Departments (Postgraduate and Undergraduate), 7 Centres, and 10 Cells, serving a student population of 6,453 during the academic session 2025-26 .

The University also oversees 129 affiliated colleges and currently holds a NAAC B+ accreditation along with a NIRF Rank Band of 101- 150 .

The celebration was attended by distinguished members of the University community.

The programme was graced by Prof Sumitra Phanjoubam, Vice-Chancellor as chief guest, while Prof M Premjit Singh, Registrar, attended as guest of honour.

The function was presided over by Prof N Basanta Singh, Dean, School of Engineering.

Delivering her address, Vice-Chancellor Prof Sumitra Phanjoubam highlighted the collective efforts of the University's teaching, administrative, and support staff in ensuring holistic development of students and the overall growth of the institution despite numerous challenges and constraints. She emphasized that the University's achievements are the result of teamwork and dedication across all departments.

Prof Sumitra Phanjoubam further acknowledged the Heads of Departments for effectively implementing and adopting academic regulations and urged the entire University community to continue working collectively towards institutional excellence and sustained growth.

In his speech as guest of honour, Prof M Premjit Singh, Registrar, congratulated the University's administration, faculty members, non-teaching staff, and students on the occasion.

He remarked that the progress achieved by Manipur University over the years has been made possible through the dedication, sacrifices, and hard work of its three major pillars-the administration, teaching community, and students.

Expressing confidence in the institution's future, he stated that with continued commitment and sincerity, the University is poised to reach even greater heights in the years ahead.

Prof A Rajmani Singha, Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), delivered the keynote and welcome address.

Reflecting on the University's journey from its inception in 1980 to its 46th foundation day, he highlighted the institution's evolution and achievements over the decades.

In his presidential address, Prof N Basanta Singh congratulated the faculty members who were honoured for their achievements in research, innovation, patents, and academic excellence.

A major highlight of the Foundation Day celebration was the felicitation of faculty members who received prestigious awards, honours, recognitions, and fellowships at the state, national, and international levels during 2024-25 .

Prof Dr Lisam Shanjukumar Singh and Dr Thangjam Davis Singh of the Department of Biotechnology were recognised for their patent relating to an anticancer composition.

Prof Dr Ksh Lal Bihari Singha, Department of Botany, was honoured for two patents: one on an apparatus for producing vinegar and biochar from agricultural residues, and another on a pyrolysis machine for bamboo and wood.

Prof Dr.Laishram Santosh Singh, Department of Physical Education and Sports Science, was recognised for his patent on a neuromuscular monitoring and stimulating headband.

Dr T Deepamanjuri Devi, Department of Sociology, received recognition for her patent on a hot glue gun enabled system for bordering and sealing of histological hard tissue.

Dr Saikat Mukherjee, Department of Biotechnology, was honoured for his patent relating to an apparatus for Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Gel Electrophoresis.
