MIU conducts workshop on natural pearl farming

Imphal, December 04 2025: Manipur International University (MIU) and Mahila Gatividhi, Bharatiya Shikshan Mandal, Manipur Prant jointly organised a 1-day workshop on pearl farming today at Nungbrang Community Hall, Imphal East.

The event was held in connection with the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026.Dr Ajitkumar Ngangbam, Professor of Zoology at MIU, served as the resource person for the workshop.

In his address, Dr Ajitkumar highlighted pearl farming as a simple and promising venture for rural farmers in Manipur, where mussels are abundant in local water bodies.

He explained that mussels found naturally in Manipur produce precious pearls, and by farming these mussels, farmers can cultivate pearls with minimal effort and without the need for advanced technology.

The workshop drew around 100 farmers, including many women, providing them with valuable insights into pearl farming as a way to earn additional income from home.

A practical session on natural pearl farming was also conducted, giving participants hands-on experience.

Later, a team of MIU experts along with Nungbrang farmers inspected potential sites suitable for natural pearl farming.

It may be mentioned that MIU will be providing handholding support to progressive women farmers in the village to establish their own pearl farming ventures.

This initiative seeks to empower rural women farmers in Manipur by promoting pearl farming as a sustainable livelihood option.
