Imphal, October 04 2024:
The Co-ordinating Body on Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee has urged all CSOs, club members, meira paibis of every locality in the State to participate in the joint people's convention to be held on October 6 at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Sanglen.
Addressing reporters at Manipur Press Club today, Convenor of the STDCM Waikhom Ananda said Meiteis of today need to pave a path for the future and Constitutional protection for the people is a necessity.
Getting the ST tag is the surest way to achieve this protection, he said.
In response to the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee's memorandum to the Union Home Ministry in 2012 to include Meiteis in the ST list, the Home Ministry in 2013 wrote to the Government of Manipur to send the needed report to include the community in the ST category.
Since 2013, for more than 10 years, the Manipur Government has not sent the needed report to include Meiteis in the ST list, he said and questioned how long the Government will take to send the report, he added.
Waikhom Ananda further said the people must follow the footsteps of the ancestors and regard 'our culture and tradition' .
To accomplish the vision of 'our forefathers the generation of today must participate in the joint convention to be organised by the STDCM and express their views and opinions to take a firm stance together' .
