Imphal, September 04 2025:
Former Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Education and Lok Sabha MP Dr Rajkumar Ranjan has written to the Union Education Minister, requesting the inclusion of Manipuri language and cultural heritage under UGC guidelines for courses on Indian heritage and culture.
In the letter, Dr Ranjan pointed out that the UGC guidelines on the introduction of courses based on Indian heritage and culture overlooked Manipuri language and cultural heritage.
Manipur language is included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution acknowledging its National importance while Rasa Leela (Manipuri classical dance form) is recognised as one of the major classical dances of India, he said and added that UNESCO also listed Manipuri heritage such as Sankirtana in its Intangible Cultural list.
The former MP added that the Manipuri indigenous script, dating back over two millennia, reflects a rich and distinct literary and cultural tradition that is both independent and distinctive.
In light of these facts, it is matter of grave concern that Manipuri language and cultural heritage have not been adequately represented in the UGC's heritage based courses, he argued and stated that the omission undermines the Constitutional, historical and cultural identity of the Manipuri community which forms an integral part of the Indian ethos.
The MP then urged the Ministry of Education to direct the UGC to modify and include courses on Manipuri language, literature, classical dance, script and cultural heritage under its heritage programme.
He further demanded that the unique identity, contributions and pride of Manipuri community be promoted and safeguarded for future generations.
