As in other parts of the country, the 37th National Safety Day was also observed in the State today in commemoration of setting up the National Safety Council.
It was for the first time in Manipur that the National Safety Day is being celebrated.
'Ensure safe and healthy work place' was the theme of this year's observance.
Organised mainly under the aegis of the Labour Department, Government of Manipur, the observance function was held at the hall of the Food Processing Training Centre located at Porompat in Imphal East.
Labour and Employment Minister P Parijat and Minister of Commerce and Industries Y Erabot Singh graced the observance function as chief guest and functional president respectively.
Commissioner of Labour and Employment AR Khan, Director of Commerce and Industries Dhiraj Yumnam and general secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur State Unit L Sotinkumar Singh were also present at the occasion as guests of honour.
In his presidential address, Commerce and Industries Minister Y Erabot said that people in Manipur are today living in a disturbed state.
So the need of the hour is to understand the problems plaguing the State and try to solve them collectively.
It is also essential to educate the workers so that they can contribute their mite in augmenting the economy of the State, the Minister said.
In his address as chief guest of the function, Labour and Employment Minister P Parijat pointed out that the Government has enacted various Acts and formulated laws for the welfare of the workers.
But these Acts and laws are not being implemented properly.
This is really unfortunate for the workers of the State, he said, while exhorting the workers to extend co-operation among themselves towards ensuring their rights and privileges.
In continuation of the programme, Entomologist Dr Kh Ibohal Singh of CAU, Agronomist Prof L Nabachandra Singh, Inspector of Factories of Industries Department Kh Mangoljao Singh, Environmentalist Engineer N Minaketan of Population Control Board and Deputy Director of Public Health and Engineering Department Dr O Joykumar presented papers on different topics as resource persons and later facilitate a discussion session.
