Bishnupur, July 03 2024:
Alleging medical negligence and wrong medication, Oinam Brinanda, son of a deceased patient from Moirang Kiyam Leikai sought the attention of Manipur Medical Council, Directorate of Health Services Manipur and Manipur Government to probe the case of his mother and provide befitting punishment.
Speaking to media persons during a press meet held today at his residence, Oinam Brinanda stated that her mother Oinam Ongbi Shilla (47 yrs) was brought to Community Health Centre (CHC) Moirang for complaints of dizziness and headache on May 19, 2024 .
At the CHC, they consulted with the doctor on duty Dr Lourembam Ningthou where the doctor prescribed 'Labetalol injection' citing it as a case of high blood pressure.
However, they returned home as they didn't have enough money to purchase the injection and went to the CHC later at around 9 pm on the same day, he said.
Brinanda went on to state that they purchased the prescribed injection from a pharmacy located in the CHC campus and gave the injection to a nurse for confirmation and later his mother was administered the injection by the nurse.
After around five minutes of receiving the injection, her mother complained of breathing difficulties and fainted.
Considering the condition of his mother, Dr Lourembam Ningthou started inquiring about her mother's medical history where he informed that his mother is an asthma patient, Brinanda said.
Thereafter, the doctor administered another injection and was taken to Raj Medicity in an ambulance, he added.
He went on to highlight that the ambulance did not have life saving facilities apart from a oxygen cylinder.
Brinanda expressed discontentment that without any life saving facilities in the ambulance and without a staff to perform CPR or emergency procedures, they were referred to Raj Medicity.
Upon arrival, his mother was confirmed dead on arrival by the doctors of Raj Medicity, he said.
Alleging that his mother died due to 'medical negligence and wrong medication' by the doctor on duty Dr Lourembam Ningthou without referring to medical history of his mother, he urged the relevant medical authorities in the State to investigate the matter and take up strict measures against the defaulters to ensure that such cases do not recur so as to save precious lives.
In view of the above circumstances, Brinanda started inquiring about the said injection Labetalol where it has been found that this injection should not be given to an asthma patient as per the experts and medical websites.
Accordingly, to seek justice for his mother's case, he submitted a memorandum to the Medical Council Manipur and relevant authorities.
He also met the Health Minister in this regard.
Lastly, he urged the authorities concerned to investigate the case at the earliest and provide befitting penalty to those who do not perform their duties diligently.
