Seized SUPs to be recycled at Assam

Imphal, August 01 2025: The Single Use Plastic (SUP) items recovered during the drive conducted by Manipur Pollution Control Board, Imphal Municipal Corporation and the Environment and Climate Change Department will be dispatched to Guwahati for recycling, said K Chandrakumar, Municipal Commissioner of IMC.

He made the statement while overseeing the process of piercing holes into bags filled with SUP products to prevent them from being reused.

Speaking in this connection, K Chandrakumar said that the drive which started on April 15 has managed to seize around 7 tons of SUP products till date.

Additionally, fines amounting to Rs 1.5 lakh have been collected from shops selling these banned items and the sum has been deposited to the relevant Government account, he added.

A public notice was issued inviting EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) registered firms or units/agencies under such firms to undertake the recycling project.

After signing an agreement with Ashok Trader Company, the dispatch of SUP items to Guwahati will begin on Sunday, he informed.

He added that many plastic firms in the State were approached to crush or puncture holes into the recovered SUP items to prevent them from being used again.

However, due to electricity and machine problems, they resorted to using iron rods to puncture holes into the plastic bottles and other items starting from today.

Saying that drives against Single Use Plastics will be conducted in the future, he urged people to stop their use.
