Imphal, April 30 2025:
On the occasion of May Day, the Federation of Civil Society Organisation (FOCS), Manipur has extended wishes for workers to be free from oppression and to receive their due rights, including fair wages.
Highlighting the plight of workers, a press release issued by Nerish Mangang, secretary information and public relations, FOCS said that many workers in both the private and public sector in the State are deprived of their rights.
Saying that the wages fixed for worker/labourers by the State are exploitative and unfair, FOCS added that Manipur is one of the states offering unjust wages to its workers.
In view of the rising prices in Manipur, the wages offered by the State to workers are not acceptable, it added.
Owing to the nearly two-year old conflict, drivers who used to ply along the National Highways are deprived of their work.
As such, the authority concerned should ensure free movement along the National Highways connecting Manipur with other States, said FOCS .
Drawing attention to the plight of nurses working in private hospitals and clinics, FOCS said that 80% of all nurses are women who are subjected to low wages and long working hours/shifts.
Urging the Government to address the substandard wages of private school teachers, FOCS asserted that the relevant authority should fix an appropriate salary for the teachers and secure their rights.
