Imphal, April 28 2026:
Peace activist Malem Thongam has submitted a petition to the Supreme Court Chief Justice pleading to take a suo moto cognizance against the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) and the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF).
Under the banner of "Cycling for Manipur Peace", Malem Thongam took a cycle expedition through five States starting from Qutub Minar, Delhi on October 5 last year.
As the peace activist reached Manipur, he was prohibited by COTU to travel through Kangpokpi to Imphal on December 17, 2025 .
Again, Malem Thongam planned a peace rally to all the 16 districts of Manipur but again he was prevented from entering Churachandpur by the ITLF.
Taking strong exception to the State Government's failure to take any action with regard to these unlawful obstructions made by the COTU and ITLF, Malem Thongam today submitted a petition to the Supreme Court Chief Justice.
Notably, Malem Thongam submitted a similar petition to the Chief Justice, High Court of Manipur on February 18 this year to take a suo moto cognizance against COTU .
A team of women activists led by Delhi Meitei Coordinating Committee's Women Wing convenor Khumanthem Narmada and spokesperson Keisham Sangeeta accompanied Malem Thongam as he submitted the petition at the Supreme Court today.
