Kakching, January 25 2026:
The brutal killing of Mayanglambam Rishikanta in Churachandpur recently was a highly provocative act of violence that sought to anger the Meitei community and prolong the conflict, Kakching MLA M Rameshwar said as he condemned the incident today.
The criminals behind the heinous murder must be arrested, and the Kuki MLAs must extend every possible help to bring the perpetrators to justice, he said.
The MLA made these comments while inspecting the construction of a road using paver technology at Kakching Sumak Leikai Bamol Pareng.
Answering to queries of media persons, Rameshwar said the President's Rule administration must swiftly deliver justice in the case.
Mayanglambam Rishi-kanta was the son of M Tombi of Kakching Khunou Uchal Makhong Leikai.
He was abducted by armed Kuki militants from his fiancee's house in Churachandpur on January 21 night, and was shot dead the same night at around 10 at Natjang, under the jurisdiction of Henglep police station, Churachandpur.
The family members of the deceased, people of the locality, Sugnu AC MLA K Ranjit and former candidate M Binod have submitted a memorandum to the Governor and urged him for strict actions in the case, Rameshwar said.
While the PR administration has indeed taken positive steps and handed over the case to the NIA, it must do more for justice to be delivered swiftly, Rameshwar said.
The killing of Rishikanta was a heinous criminal act, and as such, the perpetrators of the crime must be treated as criminals.
Taking strict action against criminality and punishing the criminals according to the law, instead of giving crimes a communal tinge, would be the right path, he said.
The killing of Rishikanta was a criminal act aimed at sabotaging processes to bring about peace, and possible formation of a new Government.
It was aimed at provoking the Meiteis to prolong the conflict, Rameshwar said.
He wished for early formation of a new Government, and appealed to the people to collectively work toward bringing peace.
