Imphal, August 23 2025:
The All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and the Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) have called off their agitation over the May 20, 2025, Gwaltabi incident after reviewing the assurances and actions taken by the authorities.
In a joint statement, AMWJU and EGM stated that the resolution was adopted during a meeting held at the Manipur Press Club today.
They mentioned that the Governor had assured a fair inquiry into the matter, and subsequently, a two-member inquiry committee was formed, which submitted its report on June 13, 2025 .
The statement further noted that the Manipur Government has officially informed AMWJU and EGM that the recommendations have been accepted, and necessary directives have been issued to the concerned departments and security agencies to prevent such incidents in the future.
AMWJU and EGM noted the steps taken with cautious optimism and placed on record that while the agitation is being called off in good faith, the journalist community will remain vigilant.
The safety and dignity of media persons are non negotiable and any failure in implementing the Committee's recommendation will invite renewed democratic action from the press bodies, it cautioned.
