MP advocates for Manipuri language preservation

Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has once again reaffirmed his dedication to get Manipuri recognized as a classical language and allow civil service aspirants to take exams in Meitei Mayek.
Addressing the International Mother Language Day observance held at GP Women College as chief guest on Friday, Sanajaoba sounded an alarm about the potential demise of the Manipuri language, emphasizing the urgent need for concerted efforts to promote and preserve it.
He cautioned that without proactive measures, the language may gradually fade away, existing merely in name.
The MP appealed to every Manipuri to take immense pride in their unique script and language which are integral parts of their cultural identity and heritage.
Expressing concern about the alarming rate at which languages of small tribes are disappearing, he emphasized the urgent need to promote and preserve these languages by actively using them in daily life.
Leishemba stressed that speaking and using one's mother language is crucial to its survival, encouraging communities to prioritize their native languages.
He lamented the erosion of Manipuri language, citing the example of "Meira Chukhatpa" being replaced by the phrase "candle lighting" .
Expressing disappointment and concern that many Manipuri students struggle to count beyond 59 in their native language, the MP added that there is no reason to take pride in the fact that many Manipuri students are losing proficiency in their mother tongue.
Sanajaoba said that he is determined to secure classical language status for Manipuri.
Saying that he is also actively working to include the Manipuri script in Indian currency notes and to allow civil service aspirants to take the exam in Meitei Mayek.
The programme which was organised by Resource Forum Manipur (REFORM) and GP Women's College was also attended by Director of Language Planning and Implementation L Radhakanta, Principal of GP Women's College Prof L Rajen, REFORM president Prof Ch Ibohal and general secretary Dr K Chinglenkhomba among others.
