Imphal, October 21 2025:
Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) Director Pukhrambam Bilash has noted that artists, once marginalized and looked down upon, are now gradually gaining respect and recognition for their invaluable contributions to cultural arts.
Addressing an annual day of Academy of Indigenous Music (AIM) Bamon Kampu as chief guest today, Bilash added that women were previously discouraged from pursuing cultural arts in the past but that societal attitudes and perceptions have shifted over time.
People now appreciate the beauty of cultural arts, he said, adding that cultural practices and traditions are intricately linked with art.

He also mentioned that artists have immense respect for their gurus, a trait that is notably distinct in the artistic field compared to many other professions.
Stating that artists now hold a respectable position in society, the JNMDA Director highlighted that arts have entered the academic sphere, with institutions like Manipur University of Culture, Manipur University, schools, and colleges offering art-related courses.
He emphasized that gurus who have dedicated their lives to preserving and promoting cultural arts must not be forgotten.
Expressing concern over the apparent lack of interest among students in Nat Sankirtan, he emphasized the need to promote this traditional art form.
Konsam Kumar, Manipur State Kala Akademi awardee cum retired senior guru of Ras Department at JNMDA, stated that exposing young people to the beauty of cultural arts can help address the apparent behavioural decline among them.
Many young people nowadays lack respect for elders and proper communication skills, which is concerning, he said, adding that cultural arts play a vital role in building a respectful society.
The function featured the distribution of the Irengbam Singh Memorial Award and a showcase of cultural items.
