Police officer injured in stand off with students

Imphal West SDPO A Ghanashyam Sharma was injured on his forehead after he was hit by a stone pelted by agitating students of TG Higher Secondary School today.
The police officer received the injury when they blocked the students who tried to storm out from their campus with the suspected intention of taking out a rally towards the Chief Minister's official residence demanding implementation of ILPS in the State.
Initially, the students staged a sit-in-protest inside their school campus pressing the same demand.
After getting information about their proposed rally, the police closed the main gate of the school and guarded them from outside in the afternoon.
The students however pushed the gate from inside in their bid to break it open on several occasion.
However, a strong police team prevented them from coming out from the school campus.

Peeved with the action of the police, some students shouted at the police and hence heated arguments broke out on several occasions between the police and agitating students.
Later, some students pelted stones at the police team from the school campus wherein SDPO Ghananashyam was hit by a stone.
Even as the police team was trying to pacify the students of TG Higher Secondary School, a large number of students of Johnstone Higher Secondary School suddenly came towards Nityaipat Chuthek on Kanglapat road.
A police team rushed towards them and blocked the students on the busy road before they could reach Raj Bhavan gate.
After standing there for around half an hour, a group of students of Johnstone Higher Secondary School managed to reach the gate of TG Higher Secondary School.
They asked the girl students of TG Higher Secondary School to come out from their campus.
As the police chased the boy students towards Keishampat side, some students stumbled and fell on the ground.
They received some minor injuries but stood up and ran towards Keishampat.
A police team led by Imphal West Additional SP (Operations) Th Vikramjit managed to drive them away up to Wahengbam Leikai.
However, the students did not retreat and tried to proceed towards Keishampat Junction.
A confrontation broke out between police and agitating students as the police erected a barricade at Keishampat Thokchom Leikai area.
After a few minutes of heated confrontation, police fired a mock bomb after taking permission from the Duty Magistrate who was present at the site to disperse the students.
The irate students then pelted stones towards the police.
Later, police fired two rounds of tear gas shells and chased the students.
The students then ran inside a lane of Keishampat Thokchom Leikai near Bheigo Hotel and fled the area.
On the other hand, a large number of police personnel was deployed at TG Higher Secondary School gate till the end of school hour.
The students were however allowed to return home after the end of school hour.
