Foundation Day celebrated

The Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL), Kangleipak celebrated its 22nd Foundation Day at Gandhi Memorial (GM) Hall, Imphal today.
The celebration was graced by dignitaries, including Khongbantabam Ibomcha, MLA Lamlai AC; Laishram Boby Devi, Chairperson, Imphal West Zilla Parishad; Dr Waikhom Romesh, Head, Manipuri Department, GP Womens' College; Yumkhaibam Surijitkumar Khuman, president, HERICOUN; and Khaidem Ingocha Meetei, president, MEELAL.
The event began with a 'Pena Sheihek' followed by presentation of awards to the position holders, consolation prize and Best Handwriting Award winners of the 19th Meetei Mayek Competition held on August 3 last.
Delivering the keynote address, MEELAL secretary Langoljam Nongmailembi Leima said that after long years of demand and agitation, Manipuri language was given its due recognition and finally included in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India on August 20, 1992.She recounted the hardships and struggle of MEELAL members who fought for the implementation of Meetei Mayek in the State.
"Meetei Mayek was officially implemented from May 18, 2005 after MEELAL had an agreement with the then Government and it was inducted in school syllabus from 2006", said Nongmailembi while adding that the Manipuri indigenous script is now taught at the University level.
Moreover, the Disabled Development Association Manipur (DDAM) also celebrated its 19th Foundation Day at Singjamei Hao Ground, Imphal today.
