Imphal, November 15 2008:
An awareness generation programme for women christened "Wake Up, Women" was organised by the All Manipur Nupi Marup under the sponsorship of the Manipur State Commission for Women at Manipur Press Club today.
Speaking at the programme as a resource person, advocate Supriya asserted that it would go a long way in averting difficulties in future for every women to take their marriage vow in proper manner.
In legal perspectives, a wife is a woman married to a man.
Even as a man has many wives in secret or overtly, only the wife whose marriage was performed under socially and legally acceptable norms has the greatest right in her husband, Supriya said.
Such wife has the legal capacity to file a complaint in family courts seeking divorce in case there is any irreconcilable difference with her husband.
Such woman has the possibility to join Government service in place of her husband in the event of her husband's death.
She also has the right to inherit the properties left by the husband, explained Supriya.
On the other hand, many women whose marriages have not been solemnised according to social norms have been enduring various difficulties even as they have many facilities due from their husbands like inheritance of properties, maintenance money etc.
The opening function of the awareness programme was graced by MSCW Chairperson Dr Ch Jamini, former Art and Culture Minister Dr M Nara and president of the All Manipur Nupi Marup Y Ibeni as presidium members.
In the technical session, Dr M Nara spoke on "Women and Health" as a resource person.
DM College of Arts, English Reader Dr Ch Sheelaramani presented a paper on "Women and Education" as Social Welfare SDO A Kameshwar spoke on "Women and Welfare Measures".
