Imphal, September 15 2026: Even as guidelines under the Flag Code of India govern the use of flag posts on vehicles, the unauthorised use of flag posts remains prevalent in Manipur.

A well-placed source said such unauthorised use of flag posts not only violates official protocols but could also pose a serious threat to State security and law-and-order enforcement.

The issue assumes greater significance given the prevailing situation in Manipur, the source said, stressing the need for strict enforcement of the guidelines.

According to an order issued by the State Home Department on April 26, 2022, those authorised to use flag posts include Members of Parliament, MLAs, Adhyakshas/Chairpersons of PRIs, ADCs and ULBs, the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police and presidents of recognised political parties, among others.

The order specifically stated that anti-social elements could misuse flag posts to evade law-enforcement agencies.

Another order was issued on June 30, 2023, adding some more officials to the list of those authorised to use flag posts.

The source, however, alleged that a Principal of a certain school has been using a flag post despite not being authorised to do so .
