World Organ Donation Day observed

The World Organ Donation Day was observed at the premises of the IMA Lamphelpat today.
Body and Organ Donors Association Manipur (BODAM), Mohan Foundation, Association of Healthcare Providers of India (AHPI) Manipur, Indian Medical Association Manipur State Branch and Shija Hospital and Research Institute jointly held the event.
At the event, AHPI Manipur State Chapter president Dr Palin Khundongbam said the world organ donation day was observed under the theme "Be the Reason for Someone's Smile Today!" to raise awareness and inspire people to donate organs.
A person, when deceased, can save the lives of 8 persons, he said.
Donating organs can save others' lives and enhance their quality of living.
From eyes and heart to lungs and intestines, people can donate various organs.
Nowadays, even hands are being donated by dying patients, he said.
Kidney transplant has been performed successfully in Manipur.
Shija Hospital has now got clearance to perform liver transplantation, but this has not been performed as of yet, Dr Palin said.
He added Manipur is first in NE in deceased donation.
The Mohan Foundation is visiting schools and colleges giving students awareness on organ donation, he said.
Manipur University's Vice Chancellor Prof N Lokendra Singh, Directorate of Health Services Director Dr O Sanahanbi Devi, IMA Manipur secretary Dr Soram Goutam, BODAM president M Joychandra among others attended the observance.
Families of body and organ donors were feted and honoured at the event.
