Imphal, October 07 2025:
Installation of smart meter at households of Imphal city and adjoining areas, particularly areas under Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) which have access to tap water is on the verge of completion.
Sources in PHED said that smart meters have been installed in around 50,000 households which have access to tap water.
The project of introducing smart meters was launched for the first time in IMC areas under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) .
Under the AMRUT scheme, infrastructure for essential services such as water supply, sewerage, storm water drainage, green spaces, non-motorized transport etc are being developed in select cities. With smart meters now installed at around 50,000 households, the department has been considering levying water tax based on the volume of water used by each household, said the sources.
As of now, water tax is being levied at the flat rate of Rs 250 per month.
PHE Department has already sent relevant documents to the State Government to levy water tax based on the volume of water used by each household instead of the current flat rate of Rs 250 per month.
The matter is being examined and the revised rates of water tax will come into force from March next year at the latest, said the sources.
An appropriate tax rate would be fixed after working out an approximate volume of water a household may use in a month.
If any household uses additional volume of water, additional tax would be levied, said the sources.
