Thoubal, September 07 2025:
The District Health Society, Thoubal, under the initiative of National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health, observed the "6th International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies" at Lilong Higher Secondary Madrassa.
The programme held under the theme "Racing for Air: Every Breath Matters", was attended by Chief Medical Officer Thoubal, Dr Y Nokul Singh as chief guest; Lilong Higher Secondary Madrassa, Principal W Rameshwor Singh as functional president; and District Hospital Thoubal, Medical Superintendent Dr W Ruhinikumar Singh as guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Y Nokul Singh urged collective efforts for restoring ecological balance and tackling climate change for future generations.
He highlighted that even minor daily practices such as use of airconditioner, refrigerators, vehicles, burning of plastics, and emissions from industries contribute significantly to global warming and air pollution.
Dr W Ruhinikumar Singh pointed out that India is currently among the most air-polluted countries in the world, with more than around 8.1 million people dying annually due to air pollution-related illnesses.
He added that Thoubal, once hailed as one of the cleanest regions in Manipur, now ranks among areas with poor air quality.
He also encouraged greater use of public transport, bicycles, e-vehicles and to promote tree plantation to help the State evolve into a green city.
In his speech, V Rameshwor Singh encouraged students to cultivate the habit of tree plantation and environment conservation.
He stated that as part of "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign across schools, the school had also organised a tree plantation drive in the school campus, to safeguard the environment.
He also lauded the officials of District Health Society Thoubal for successfully organising the programme.
The event saw participation of around 200 students, teachers and DHS Thoubal officials.
As part of the event, an open quiz competition, led by District Program Manager Ch Basanta, was also conducted, in which ten students who provided the most correct answers were awarded prizes.
