Imphal, August 07 2025:
The People's Progressive Alliance Manipur (PPAM) has expressed its support for observing International Indigenous Day on August 9 'to reaffirm the fundamental rights of indigenous peoples to self-determination, land, language, and development free from external diktats' .
PPAM, in a statement issued by its convenor MC Meetei, said that the organisation also supports the demand for justice and restoration of rights for internally displaced persons.
It said that indigenous self-determination, and not bureaucratic paternalism, is the only legitimate foundation for food security, cultural sovereignty, and enduring peace.
The crisis of the indigenous is not a relic of history, but an escalating emergency under the current global political order, PPAM said and added that the indigenous people are on the frontlines of resistance to land theft, cultural sieges, and digital exclusion across the globe.
The right to self-determination is not negotiable and must be enshrined in law, policy, and practice, the Alliance added.
In Manipur, International Day for the World's Indigenous Peoples is being observed in an unprecedented display of unity, it said and added that the Indigenous People's Forum, Manipur, under the aegis of the North East Indigenous People's Forum (NEIPF), marks the day at the City Convention Centre, Imphal, with the theme: "Indigenous People's Right to Self Determination: A Pathway for Food Security and Sovereignty" .
