Imphal, September 05 2019: Chief Minister N Biren Singh has stated that development cannot be achieved without discipline in any society.

He was speaking at the State Level Teachers Day Celebration 2019 held at Manipur State Film Development Society, Palace Compound, here today.

Speaking as chief guest of the function, the Chief Minister said that 'what we are today is because of the teachers'.

The true essence of celebrating Teachers Day is to show gratitude, respect and recognition for their selfless sacrifice to nurture the pillars of the Nation, he added.

He appealed the teachers to restrict the influence of unknown people/groups to students for taking part in agitation/rallies/protests.

He maintained that teachers should not encourage their students to take part in agitation as the learning period for students is limited.

He said that the Government will not hesitate to be at the forefront in dealing with issues which affect the common interest of the State.

Stating that the Government is committed to improve Government schools and provide quality education to the children, he stated that the present Government has initiated 'School Fagathansi' and 'Lairik Tamhanlasi' mission.

This year, Government schools have recorded highest pass percentage at 74.6 percent in the Board exam till now.

The number of position holders from Government schools is increasing in the last two years.

Such result shows the commitment of the Government to improve education sector in the State, he added.

There are a lot of families who cannot afford private schools, that's why the Government is committed to improve Government schools, he added.

"As students are under continuous parental and exam pressure, we need to provide more space to foster their creativity and extra curricular activities", said the Chief Minister.

Elaborating the 'Lairik Tamhanlasi' mission, he stated that around 1000 drop-out students have been readmitted to Government schools till now.

Under the School Fagathansi mission, pre-nursery classes will be opened in the identified 60 schools across the State.

Hostels, residential schools etc would be constructed in various hill areas such as Chingai, Churachandpur, Mao etc, he added.

To improve school infrastructure, a sum of Rs 17.50 crore has been earmarked in the budget, he added.

Around 19 transit accommodations for teachers are being constructed in hill areas of the State.

"If we want to serve the people then we need to reach out to the grassroots.

Various initiatives and schemes of the present Government such as GTV, GTH, CMHT etc have transformed the lives of the people of the State", Biren claimed.

To regulate establishment and management of private schools and coaching centres in the State, the Government had passed the Manipur Private School (Registration and Regulation) Bill and Manipur Coaching Institute (Control and Regulation) Bill, he added.

Addressing the gathering, Minister for Education Th Radheshyam said that teachers play a vital role in Nation building and fulfilling the dreams and destiny of the students.

He maintained that there is no profession nobler than teaching.

"It is due to the hard work of teachers that we could see positive changes in education sector in the State", he added.

The Minister stated that every school will have 'No School Bag Day' every Saturday to ensure that students studying in classes I-VIII shall be taught extra curricular activities, games and sports etc.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister presented State Teacher Award to eight teachers.

The awardees are Waikhom Ritabai Chanu, Arambam Rajmata Devi, Ayekpam Sangeeta Devi, Aribam Indubala Devi, Longjam Manglembi Devi, Hemam Rajen Singh, Hena Singsit and Mayanglambam Manglem Singh.
