World Environment Day: Call for protection of environment sounded

World Environment Day was widely celebrated across the State on the theme "Land Restoration, Desertification & Drought Resilience" marked by mass environment awareness programmes, cleanliness and plantation drives highlighting the importance of safeguarding the environment.
Bishnupur
The district witnessed plantation programmes and painting competitions based on the theme of conserving the environment today.
A plantation drive was held at New Model Public School Moirang campus, Moirang Kokilabon Leikai today organised by Kege Moirang Kendra Apunba Lup (KEMKAL) in association with Lions Club of Moirang and New Model Public School along with the support from Bishnupur Forest Division.
Similar plantation drives were held at Loyola School Bishnupur campus and at Chingningthou lampak and Thumukhong ■ Lairembi lampak in Thanga AC.
Meanwhile, a spot painting competition was conducted on the theme "Land Restoration, Desertification & Drought Resilience" at Thanga Government Higher Secondary School organised by Loktak development authority (LDA).
World Environment Day was also observed at Ereima Ima Haraobung Naranseina Mamang Leikai organised by Yaiphakol VLF Naranseina under the aegis of Block Mission Management Unit Moirang CD Block and Manipur State Rural Livelihood Mission (MSRLM); Department of RD & PR Govt of Manipur.
Chandel
World Environment Day was observed at the Conference Hall of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Chandel with Abhijith KV, IFS, DFO, Chandel as the chief guest.
Speaking as the chief guest, Abhijith, KV urged the fanners not to exploit the environment and take up sincere efforts for the protection of the environment.
Stating that climate change is a stark reality and facing it should be the collective effort of the society as a whole and not of a single NGO, student body, CSO or a farmer.
He reiterated that farmers should focus on the long term ecological balance and not just on short term gains based on tree felling and firewood collection.
Around 517 saplings of papaya, jamun, treebean and jackfruit were distributed and also planted in the vicinity of the office premises.
The programme was attended by 68 farmers and staff of KVK Chandel.
Meanwhile, the District Administration, Chandel; Superintendent of Police, Chandel; ICDS Project Chandel and Self-help groups of MSRLM of BMMU Chakpikarong Block and Chandel Block in collaboration with CRISIL foundation observed World Environment Day today by planting more than 100 saplings of trees at the District Headquarters, Chandel attended by the Deputy Commissioner Chandel, Mayanglambam Rajkumar, IAS; Additional SP, Shankerjit, MPS; OC Chandel Police and staff of DC Office Chandel and police personnel of the District Police, Chandel.
A plantation drive was also held at Maha Union Higher Secondary School, Japhou jointly organised by Chandel Naga Peoples Organisation, CNPO and Chandel Forest Division and at Chakpikarong Youth Club complex.
Jiribam
World Environment Day observance was widely held in different places of Jiribam district organised by Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Jiribam district branch; Jiribam Range Forest Department; Youth Red Cross Unit, Jiri College; National Service Scheme, Jiri College, MSF Jiribam, PHED, CRISIL Foundation-Centre for financial literacy (CFL), FEW and Covenant English School.
Kakching
In a bid to safeguard the environment, students of Keirak Govt Upper Primary School and Kha Manipur College, NCC Unit planted tree saplings at Angaan Ching Eco Park, Kakching.
Senapati
Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA) in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Govt of Manipur commemorated World Environment Day.
Cleanliness drive at Senapati Bazar areas and plantation drive at different places were the main events of today's observation.
Commemorating the day, the Naamai Ecotourism Society (NETS) in collaboration with the Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Govt of Manipur; Directorate of Extension (S), Central Agricultural University (CAU) and 16 Assam Rifles, Maram along with other institutions, NGOs and volunteers planted trees at Naamai Zho Tourism spot in Senapati district under the theme "Plant and adopt a tree, Imprint your legacy".
More than 500 trees were planted, installed tree guards and inscripted their names in the signage to nurture the oxygen footprint.
Thoubal
Wide scale plantation programmes across the district marked the World Environment Day observance.
Thoubal Forest Division in association with Peace and Freedom Academy Thoubal Haokha observed the day at Thoubal Haokha Mamang ground.
In line with the observance, an awareness programme cum plantation drive was held at Rice Research Station Khangabok relief camp organised by the District Health Society Thoubal.
The observance were also held at Khongjom Standard English School organised by Thoubal Block Health Society; Bright Brain Institute at Haoreibi Ahanbi Salam organised by Lilong Block Health Society; Salai Eco Tourism Park, Ukhongshang organised by International Peace and Social Advancement (IPSA) Thoubal branch and Salai Kanba Lup Khonghou, Thoubal; Wangjing Laikol organised by The Social and Cultural Development Centre ( SOCDEC) Wangjing and Wangjing Ningthou Thougallup.
The members of Arambai Tenggol Unit II also carried out a mass plantation drive in the district.
Sahitya Thoupang Lup (SATHOULUP) in collaboration with Tentha Khongbal Welfare Association (TKWA) observed the day by planting trees at Tentha Khongbal Multiplex.
As a part of the observation, the environmental award Ningombam Pheiraba Award was presented to TKWA acknowledging its significant contributions towards the cause of environment protection.
Ukhrul
Khamatek, Ukhrul as a part of the clean environment movement, collected around ten thousand empty bottles from Ukhrul town.
Speaking at the sidelines of the bottle collection drive, member of Khamatek, Khuisang Ragui expressed that the plastic bottles drive was organised with an objective to pledge support to the global movement to protect the environment and make people understand the importance of safeguarding nature.
In line with World Environment Day observance, Khamatek is organising a weeklong plantation drive in Ukhrul town, he said.
He further informed that Khamatek in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Govt of Manipur; District Administration and ADC Ukhrul installed plastic bottle banks in the main market hub of Ukhrul town for proper deposit of used bottles.
To mark the day, a tree plantation and cleanliness drive was held at Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Hungpung organised by Tangkhul Catholic Youth Federation in collaboration with the Ukhrul Forest Department.
Meanwhile, in a significant environmental initiative, Assam Rifles, under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (South), organized comprehensive tree plantation drives across multiple districts in Manipur today.
The plantation drive spanned several areas, including Mantripukhri, Keithelmanbi, Irengbam, L Koireng, Nambol and Waroiching areas in Imphal; the villages of Shangshak, Aishi, Kamtong, and Kangpat Khullen in Kamjong district; Kangvai and ten surrounding villages in Churachandpur district; Sajik Tampak and Lambung in Chandel districts and in Modi, Chandel district.
Collectively, over 5000 saplings were planted in these regions, symbolizing a unified effort to combat climate change, improve air quality, and ensure a greener, healthier environment for future generations, said a statement by the Assam Rifles.
In a resounding commitment to the environmental stewardship and community engagement, the Spear Corps of Indian Army organized & series of events across the Northeastern States of Manipur, Assam, Tripura, and Nagaland on the occasion of World Environment Day being celebrated to foster awareness about environmental conservation and sustainability among local communities and school students.
The Army in collaboration with the Bishnupur Forest Division, organised a plantation drive at Kumbi Public School in Kumbi.
250 saplings were planted and an interactive educational session focused on preservingecosystems and promoting eco-friendly lifestyles.
At Moreh in Tengnoupal district, a painting competition for the children was organised along with a cleanliness drive with residents.
These activities, under the theme "Olives Love Green", aimed to inspire environmental responsibility among the participants.
