Imphal, August 01 2025:
Director of Horticulture and Soil Conservation K Devdutta Sharma has asked the Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA) to explore means to increase the export of organic crops grown by local farmers.
MOMA organised a programme christened "Transforming Farmers Livelihood through Direct Benefit Transfer" under Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER) at the farmers' training hall of the Agriculture department at Sanjenthong today.
As part of the programme, K Devdutta distributed five Bolero pick-up vehicles to Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) of Imphal East, Tengnoupal, Ukhrul, Chandel and Thoubal for transportation of horticulture crops under Phase IV of MOVCDNER.
Addressing the function as chief guest, the Director of Horticulture and Soil Conservation said that similar pick-up vehicles will also be distributed to FPCs of other districts.
The pick-up vehicles were provided at a 75 per cent subsidised rate to support farmers, he appealed to the FPCs to utilize the vehicles effectively to boost crop production and marketing.
He, meanwhile, suggested that introducing barcode facilities for marketing locally grown organic horticulture crops will boost exports, ultimately benefiting farmers.
Devdutta asked MOMA to make efforts to introduce barcode facilities for at least 5 to 10 horticulture crops.
Noting that global warming and climate change have made it challenging for local farmers to predict favourable weather conditions for farming, and recent floods have resulted in significant crop damage, he added that farmers are bearing the brunt of climate change.
He emphasised the need for the farmers to be aware of the impact of climate change and develop strategies to ensure harvests.
He said that FPCs have a significant role to play in making Manipur self-reliant in terms of food.
MOMA's Project Director Donald Soibam and Nodal Officer of MOVCDNER Kh Nimaichand also attended the programme.
Some farmers were also felicitated during the function.
