Imphal, June 30 2025:
Tension ran high in Churachandpur as four persons, including a deputy commander in chief of KNO/KNA were killed in a clinical and lethal ambush laid at K Mongjang Village, Songpi area under Churachandpur police station today.
Kuki National Army (KNA) is the armed wing of the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) .
According to sources, the ambush was highly suspected to have been carried out by the United Kuki National Army (UKNA) as a revenge attack for the killing of their town commander and Public Relations Officer (PRO) in October last year.
While the KNA is a signatory to the Suspension of Operation pact with the Government of India, the UKNA is a non-SoO group.
No group, however, has officially claimed responsibility for the attack as of now despite the speculation.
It is reported that the incident took place at around 2 pm when the senior leader of KNO/KNA, accompanied by two other men, was travelling in a Hyundai Creta at K Mongjang village located some 7 Kms away from Churachandpur town.
They were shot at from close range by the unknown assailants, killing all three of them instantly.
A Kuki-Zo woman (60), who was nearby, was also hit by a stray bullet and she too died on the spot.
The deceased have been identified as Thenkhothang Haokip alias Thahpi deputy commander in chief of KNA, Lengouhao Singsit and Seikhogin.
The deceased woman, on the other hand, has been identified as Nulun Phalhing (72 ) and she reportedly is from Koite village.
A team of security forces reached the site shortly after the attack and recovered several empty bullet casings.
Churachandpur police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation and the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Churachandpur District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
Security personnel have been deployed in the area as tensions remain high.
KNO/KNA is one of 25 Kuki-Zo underground organisations which signed the Suspension of Operation pact with the Government of India.
