Imphal, December 31 2024:
The annual "Meet the Media Fraternity" programme organised by the Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) was held today at their Kwakeithel office.
The event was graced by Khogendra Khomdram, president, Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) as the chief guest; Mayengbam Somorjit, president, DESAM as the functional president and Taorem Bishwajit, Editor, Sanaleibak daily as the guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Khogendra Khomdram lauded DESAM for organizing the annual event with the coming of the new year.
Expressing disagreement with the sentiment that student bodies should not be involved in issues that do not pertain to the student community, he said they should be conscious of different aspects of society as they are the future pillars of society.
Speaking on the declining student-teacher relationship, he termed it unfortunate that some teachers now view their students only as a means for making money.
At the event, Mayengbam Somorjit said that the "Meet the Media Fraternity" programme is organised on the last day of every year accompanied with warm New Year greetings.
Emphasizing on the need to perform one's duty with sincerity, he said that teachers are "human engineers" but a certain section of them see students as merchandise.
In the coming year, DESAM will pour its efforts in bringing reforms in the college education system, he said.
The DESAM president also spoke about the need to strengthen Manipur and the Meitei community.
In order to bring changes, people need to change their mindset.
A transformation will occur when pedple engaged in different professions perform their duties with a sense of patriotism, he maintained.
Addressing the ongoing conflict, he pointed out that Manipur has been mired in one crisis after another.
Claiming that a certain "architect agency" is behind the unrest, he accused them of making the public forget the core issue of die crisis by keeping them stewing in one trouble after another.
As such, Manipur society has descended into a state of confusion.
Lies and instigations are causing in-fights among the people, he added.
Additionally, Taorem Bishwajit spoke at length about the current state of education in Manipur.
On the occasion, DESAM presented a diary and a pen to the media persons present.
