Imphal, July 29 2024:
A large number of people (NFSA beneficiaries) belonging to Kshetrigao AC led by MLA Sheikh Nurul Hassan today stormed the office of Imphal East Deputy Commissioner demanding release of pending NFSA rice for the Assembly segment.
A large number of people gathered at the residence of the MLA at Top Awang Leikai, Imphal East district after which the aggrieved people led by the MLA took out a protest rally towards the Imphal East DC office at around 12.30 pm.
As the protesters reached the DC office complex, the security forces closed the main gate and thus they were denied entry.
The protesters pressed on, opened the gate and went inside.
Once inside the DC office complex, the protesters shouted a number of slogans demanding release of NFSA rice for Kshetrigao AC.
This was followed by a brief altercation between the security forces and the protesters.
Later, MLA Sheikh Nurul Hassan accompanied by a few protesters talked with the DC and other officials.
After talking with the DC for around two hours, the MLA told mediapersons that NFSA rice for Kshetrigao AC was not released for eight months before two months' quota was released recently.
"We talked with the DC, ADC, SP Imphal East and DSO inside the DC office on the pending six months' rice quota and the officials assured that the pending rice quota would be released before the State Assembly's Budget Session starts", Sheikh Nurul Hassan said.
After new fair price shop agents were appointed, many NFSA cards were rejected when the two months' rice quota were distributed, he said.
On the issue of NFSA cards, the DSO gave a written assurance that the matter would be resolved by September 7, the MLA said.
If the agreements reached today are not translated into action promptly, it would be assumed that the CAF&PD Minister is incompetent and he must step down, the MLA said.
If the assurances are not fulfilled without undue delay, there will be strong public agitation, he added.
