Rivers flow above flood level at many points

Imphal, May 29 2024: With incessant rainfall causing massive flooding in Manipur, the water level of Nambul, Imphal and Nambol River has crossed the flood level and as such metre reading of these rivers couldn't be done.

The water level of Iril River also continues to rise gradually and it is about to reach the warning level.

Speaking to The Sangai Express, an official of The Water Resources Department said that the water level of Imphal River could not be read (at metre reading point at Minuthong) at around 6 pm today as the level of the water was overflowing above the highest flood level capped at 788.400 metres.

He also said that the water level of Imphal River at another metre reading point at Lilong bridge is now at 782.250 metres which is above flood level at 781.250 metres and a few metres short of the highest flood level (782.850 metres) .

With regard to Iril River, the water level at Irilbung Thongkhong was 786.400 metres at 6 pm and it is nearing the warning and flood levels which are kept at 786.700 metres and 787.700 metres respectively.

The highest flood level of Iril River stands at 782.200 metres.

The water level of Nambul River also could not be read as the water was flowing about the highest flood level of 783.695 metres at Thong Nambonbi at 6 pm.

The water level of Nambol River in Bishnupur was also found flowing about the highest flood level (774.700 metre) when the officials went to the metre reading spot at Nambol Thongkhong at 6 pm.

The water level of Thoubal River, meanwhile, was recorded to be 777.200 metres at 6 pm and it is also nearing the warning and flood level which stand at 778.915 metres and 779.915 metres respectively.

It said that the water level of Thoubal River is still rising gradually.

At Ithai Barrage, 768.640 metres of water level was recorded at 5 pm today and it is inching closer towards the highest flood level capped at 769.320 metres.

Reportedly, the officials of the Water Resources Department and local volunteers have begun repair work at many banks/sites breached by Imphal River and also at the sites where the river has overflowed.

It is further said that the repair work of river banks which got breached or overflowed at Heingang Chonthabi and Keirang, Khurai Salanthong and Khurai Thoudam Leikai have been repaired.

Manpower and machinery have also been sent to Khabam Lamkhai where the Imphal River breached yesterday.

The official said that repair work of the sites at North AOC where Imphal River breached will be completed very soon.

Meanwhile, vehicular movements along Imphal-Moreh have been disrupted due to a landslide at Sita Lamkhai and eastern Maring areas in Tengnoupal.

Places and roads are were badly affected by the landslide include Sita Lamkhai to Lamlong Khunou road, N Satang, Chaktong, Kambang Khullen to Leibi Village road, Rilram Centre to Saibol, Leibi Village to Khudenthabi road and Moirangthel road.

In this regard, the Rilram Area Maring Organisation (RAMO) has sought the intervention of the district administration to clear the roads and to alleviate the problems being faced by the villagers and commuters alike.

RAMO and Eastern Maring Business and Traders Association (EMBTA) have started clearing the debris of the landslide at multiple places in their areas by deploying heavy machinery.
