Imphal, May 24 2024:
Noney district recorded a scorching 40 degree Celsius as mercury rose above normal today forcing schools to open in the morning only.
This, even as Manipur recorded a temperature of around 32-36 degree in Imphal, Thoubal and other places.
As excessive heat persists in Noney since the last few days, the residents, especially children have suffered physically and mentally.
Adults and children have suffered from heat stress, fatigue, headache, nosebleeds and skin rashes due to the excessive heat.
Notably, several parts of North East including Guwahati recorded a temperature of 40 degrees due to the severe heatwave.
The Indian Meteorological Department, meanwhile, has forecast some relief from May 25 .
IMD forecast that the temperature may drop to 30-34 degrees from May 26 .
Speaking to The Sangai Express, M Dangmei, a warden at Netaji Subhaschandra Bose Awasia Vidyalaya at Longmai Part-I, said due to extreme hot weather, the school is open only in the morning from 8 am to 12 pm.
Children Training School at Longmai Part-III opens from 8 am to 11.50 am.
Tent Maker Academy, Noney opens from 6 am to 9 am.
M Dangmei said the morning session provides some relief to both the students and teachers.
"The temperature yesterday also touched 40 degrees.
People are really struggling.
Even electric-fan is not enough to beat the heat," Dangmei said.
Dangmei continued that the condition has been made worse by the unreliable power supply.
"When the body is sweating due to the extreme hot weather, the body feels cold when touched.
Other people are also experiencing this.
I don't know why this is so," Dangmei said.
What Dangmei complained was about the body trying to adapt and keep the temperature inside the normal range.
As the body warms up, blood spreads to the surface of the skin and we start to sweat more.
The sweat evaporates, and it helps regulate body temperature.
However, if the temperature is too high, and a person doesn't have enough fluids or the humidity is so high that sweat isn't effectively evaporating, the body may become overheated, according to experts.
Due to the high temperature, Dangmei said adults and children are facing many health issues.
People are sweating, feel tired, have headache, bleeding from the nose, and are experiencing skin rashes.
People are unable to go out during the day.
They are sleeping outside their houses at night, Dangmei further said.
The weather is so extreme that even the water in the pipes is hot, Dangmei said.
The people of Noney at present require immediate attention of the Government.
They need medical attention.
Regular electricity will provide some degree of relief, Dangmei said.
