Cultural centre for North East inaugurated

New Delhi, January 24, 2012: The Centre for North Eastern Culture in the National Capital was open to the people of North east and the general public today at a solemn inaugural function at the centre's campus lawn in Dwarka, West Delhi.

The inauguration was held in commemoration of the 25thAnniversary of the Mizo Peace Accord, signed on 30th June 1986. The centre is a joint collaboration of the North East Council (NEC) and Cultural Resources and Training ( CCRT).

Speaking at the function Smt Kumari Selja, Minister of Culture and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation said that the idea was initiated in 2009 when a group of north east student representatives met Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh at his office chamber .

The interaction meeting was held in the aftermath of a series of physical attacks and harassment meted out to the northeast population in Delhi particularly to the women folks.

Kumar Selja stated that the cultural centre is located in a central new township of Dwarka, which is well connected.

Laying emphasis on the need for knowing and understanding different culture and people, the culture Minister said that the centre would facilitate as the major hub of meeting point for the northeast people in particular and for anyone to mingle and interact, "we all need to learn from each other" she said.
