NIA has initiated probe : MHRC team told

Imphal, January 23 2026: A team of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) paid a solidarity visit to the family of Late Mayanglambam Rishikanta at Kakching Khunou where they were briefed about the steps taken so far to deliver justice.

During the interaction, family members informed the MHRC team that NIA has taken over the case and initiated investigation.

Rishikanta was shot dead by Kuki militants at T Natjang Village under Churachandpur district on January 21 .

As per a press note, the team was led by Acting Chairperson Kangjam Khagendra and Secretary Haobam Rosita along with officers from the Commission's Law Division and Investigation Division.

During the visit, the MHRC team was informed that FIR No 06(01) 2026 CC-PS has been registered in connection with the incident.

The family members and the Joint Action Committee apprised the Commission that the matter had been brought to the notice of Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who assured that the case would be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for prompt and speedy investigation.

The Investigation Division of the Commission also recorded the statement of a family member during the visit.

In view of the fact that the case has been entrusted to the NIA, the Commission has observed that there is no immediate requirement for intervention under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 .

However, it assured that the Commission will continue to closely monitor the matter to ensure that justice is delivered to the victim and that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
