Imphal/Jiribam, June 20 2024:
Kuki militants, one again challenging the State authority, attacked security personnel in Jiribam and set ablaze a police checkpoint located at Leingangpokpi last night.
Heavily armed Kuki militants set the police checkpoint on fire at around 10.30 pm, sources informed.
Notably the police checkpoint is located just about 6 Kms away from Jiribam district police headquarters.
On receiving information about the attack, reinforcement teams of police and commando personnel rushed to the spot but they were fired upon indiscriminately by the Kuki militants armed with sophisticated weapons from atop Phaitol village.

The police and commando personnel retaliated resulting in an exchange of fire which lasted for around 30 minutes before the Kuki militants fled from the spot, taking advantage of the darkness.
Windshield of a bullet proof vehicle and a fire tender which rushed to the spot to douse the fire were partially damaged in the attack, said the sources.
As the Kuki militants fired on their vehicle, the fire fighters jumped down and hid behind the vehicle until the exchange of fire ceased.
Even though the commando team's bullet-proof vehicle as well as the fire tender vehicle were hit by several bullets fired by Kuki militants, there was no report of any casualty.
According to the sources, Kuki militants have been attacking the particular police checkpoint with guns and bombs since a few days back prompting the authority concerned to withdraw the security personnel from the checkpoint during night.
The Kuki militants might have taken advantage of the absence of security personnel at night and set the checkpoint on fire, the sources added.
The police checkpoint burnt down by Kuki militants was later re- constructed and police personnel have been stationed there.
Notably, Leingangpokpi village of Jiribam district and Phaitol Kuki village of Tousem sub-division, Tamenglong district are separated by NH 37 .
Pointing out that Phaitol village is guarded by Central forces round the clock, many quarters have questioned how the Kuki militants managed to attack Manipur Police from Phaitol using automatic rifles.
