Imphal, October 19 2014: Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has directed the State security forces to win the confidence and trust of the people while discharging their duties.

The Chief Minister was speaking as chief guest at the 123rd Raising Day celebration of Manipur Police at the parade ground of 1st Manipur Rifles.

He said that the State Police Department was set up to enforce law and keep the society in order.

As such, every police personnel must safeguard the law while discharging their duties, he added.

People would automatically show respect to police regardless of their rank, if they are honest and they enforce the law in the right manner.

Saying that the Police Department was instituted to protect the life and property of the public, O Ibobi said that police must always try to win the confidence and trust of the people in order to maintain a good rapport with them.

Police have great roles to play in bringing peace, he said and added that bringing development requires peace.

Police need to work with dedication in order to make the State conducive for taking up development works, he added.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam while speaking at the function lauded the State police for their dedicated service rendered to the people.

Being a strife-torn region, State police work harder than their counterparts in other States, he added.

Gaikhangam said that State police work over time to ensure safety for the people of the State.

He also urged the general public to extend cooperation to the State Police Department and evaluate their work and sacrifice before criticising them.

On the other hand, he added that the police must not harass people taking advantage of being in the uniformed service.

Saying that police must always preserve the high esteem of their uniform, Gaikhangam said that maintaining discipline must always be in their mind.

DGP Shahid Ahmed said that Manipur Police have now become a complete organisation although it started serving people with just 463 personnel in 1892 .

Saying that crime rate has considerably come down now in the State, the DGP said that Manipur Police nab around 1000 UG cadres and seize around 500 arms every year in an average.

The department has also recently launched the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System in order to check the crime rate, he added.

With the department enforcing an action plan to check extortion, murder, bomb blast and other crimes in Imphal Municipal areas, around 2500 police personnel have been pressed into action under this arrangement, he added.

Around 3000 underground cadres have been brought to the mainstream so far, he added.

The chief guest received salute from 17 march past contingents in the celebration which also saw decoration of DGP commendation awards on 31 police personnel.
