Imphal, October 18 2010: The Government of India would take up the case of the reported arrest of the UNLF Chairman with the Government of Bangladesh, stated Union Home Secretary GK Pillai, but the contradiction became self evident when he later said in the same vein that India has not received any official information about the arrest/detention of Meghen in Bangladesh.

On his arrival at Tulihal Airport yesterday, GK Pillai stated that RK Meghen was arrested by Bangladeshi authorities and that no Indian agency was involved in the arrest.

Pillai is accompanied by the Secretary of DoNER, Joint Secretary in charge of North East, Ministry of Home Affairs and other high ranking officials.

Speaking to reporters at the sideline of the development seminar held at Hotel Classic today, GK Pillai however contradicted his earlier statement saying that Delhi has not received any information about the detention of Meghen alias Sanayaima in Bangladesh.

He categorically rejected media reports that Meghen has been extradited to India.

Nevertheless, as the UNLF Vice Chairman has claimed that that Meghen has been arrested, the case would be taken up with the Government of Bangladesh, Pillai said.

On being asked whether Dhaka did not inform New Delhi about the arrest of Meghen, the Home Secretary stated that the matter needs to be confirmed with Dhaka first.

However, Pillai while noting that UG leaders and cadres have several names or aliases, speculated that even if Meghen is in the custody of Bangladeshi authorities they may not know that he is Sanayaima, the Chairman of the UNLF.

"He might be there as Dilip Singh or by any other name", Pillai stated, by way of quoting an example.

Notably, there is no extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India.

Talking about the Suspension of Operation pact, Pillai said that the proposals for political dialogue would be initiated soon.

To a query regarding the reported practice of taking large amounts of bribe money during recruitment of police personnel, the Home Secretary refused to give any comment saying that it is a State subject.
