Imphal, June 18 2009: In remembrance of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the integrity of Manipur during the historic people's movement of June, 2008, the 8th Unity Day was observed today at THAU ground successfully with a solemn function under the aegis of the All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO).

Before the Unity Day function was kicked-off at THAU, AMUCO leaders along with a large number of people paid floral tributes to the martyrs memorial at Kekrupat.

The Unity Day function was graced by AMUCO president R Yangsosong Koireng, president of the Irabot Foundation Manipur Th Iboyaima, president of the Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur Memchoubi, Kuki Inpi Manipur president Hangkholun Hunglum, president of the All Manipur Muslim Development Organisation Md Ayub Khan and vice-president of the Zeliangrong Cultural Council Paojairung Thaimei as presidium members.

Addressing the gathering which was attended by thousands of people from across the State including leaders of different communities, AMUCO president Yangsosong observed that one prominent paradox which deeply hurts the sentiments of the more than 30 ethnic groups of Manipur has been the denial of the basic essence of democracy to the people of Manipur by the world's largest democracy, India.

Even though it is almost 60 years since Manipur merged with the Indian Union, it remains something of a mirage for the people of Manipur to lead a secured and dignified life.

Rather, the lives of Manipuri people have been put under perpetual threat by New Delhi by continuing the legacy of British colonial rulers and enforcing several draconian laws in Manipur which were imposed upon the Indian people by British rulers, Yangsosong alleged.

The Government of India has also been challenging the unity amongst the indigenous people of Manipur who have been co-existing under a fraternal bond for centuries, thereby threatening the territorial integrity of the erstwhile sovereign kingdom.

Highlighting the crucial need to stand united for unity, human rights and a secular society, the AMUCO president called upon the people to fight collectively for the territorial integrity as well as against the excesses of armed forces/security personnel and the alleged anti-people policies and programmes of the Government being implemented in the name of development.

Other speakers who addressed the gathering stressed on the paramountcy of strengthening emotional integrity amongst the indigenous communities of Manipur for safeguarding territorial integrity.

Former AMUCO advisor, Dhanabir Laishram asserted that the people of Manipur have a very clear understanding on whether the Government has been upholding the norms and principles of democracy or not.

What the opposition parties have been doing was also known to the people.

At such a situation, where both the ruling parties and opposition parties have failed in their duties, it is crucial for the people to take a united and firm stance, Dhanabir Laishram asserted.
