Paobitek erupts in violence, nine suspects held

Imphal, June 17 2025:
A strong protest erupted at the Paobitek area after a missing man was found dead and his body buried on the bank of Nambul River at Samurou Naorem Makha Leikai this morning.
According to information culled from the spot, a police team found the dead body of Chesam Abdul Kadir of Paobitek Mayai Leikai buried on the bank of Nambul River near a local garbage site at Samurou Naorem Makha Leikai at around 6 am today, and the body had started decomposing.
Soon the police team informed about the presence of the dead body to the State Forensic Science experts and cordoned off the area to conduct inquest of the dead body and its surrounding area.

After the arrival of the State Forensic team, inquest of the body as well as the surrounding area was done before the body was exhumed and deposited at RIMS morgue for post mortem.
Soon after getting information about the discovery, locals of Paobitek erupted in protest against the killing of Chesam Abdul Kadir and demanded immediate arrest of all the culprits.
Not long after, the protest turned violence and the mob started destroying public properties compelling security forces to fire tear gas shells and mock bombs to bring the situation under control.
Pelting of stones and firing of tear gas shells continued for some minutes before the security forces managed to bring the situation under control.
Later, the local people held a meeting at Paobitek Mayai Leikai and formed a Joint Action Committee in connection with the death of Chesam Abdul Kadir.
Some locals said that Chesam Abdul Kadir went out of his residence at around 11 pm of June 10 and he was detained by the locals of Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai on the next morning of some alleged charges and handed over to the Arambai Tenggol Samurou Unit 27.After this incident, Chesam Abdul Kadir went missing and his family lodged a missing complaint at Wangoi police station on June 11 night.
On the other hand, nine persons including a woman have been taken into police custody till the time of filing this report in connection with the death of Chesam Abdul Kadir.
Heikrujam Prafulo Singh (35) of Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai, Mayai Lambi College gate, owner of the house where Abdul Kadir was found on the intervening night of June 10 and 11 was arrested and produced before a Court last night and taken into police custody till June 23.Further, five more persons including 3 AT members and a woman who are also allegedly involved in the present case were also produced before the Duty Magistrate, Imphal West.
They too have been remanded to police custody till June 23 .
They have been identified as Longjam Henson alias Naocha Meitei (24) of Wangoi Longjam Leikai, Thounaojam Ashok Singh (20) of Wangoi Longjam Leikai, Huidrom Shyamsunder Singh (30) of Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai Tera Makhong (all AT members), Heikrujam Premchand alias Puremba (28) of Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai and Sapam Dayani Devi (42) of Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai.
On June 15, the Duty Magistrate Imphal West remanded three other AT members identified as Huidrom Somokanta of Yumnam Huidrom Khunyai, Huidrom Dipak of Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai and Thingujam Ranjit of Yumnam Huidrom Khunyai Leikai in police custody till June 21 in connection with the same case.
So far, nine persons including 6 AT members and three others have been taken into custody and five vehi-cles-three Gypsys, one DI Pick-up and one Activa moped have been seized.
