Rallies decry Waqf (Amendment) Act

Imphal, April 11 2025: Rallies were taken out in various parts of Manipur today, with protesters expressing their strong opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 .

Meitei Pangal demonstrators marched through the streets of Hatta in Imphal East and other places, voicing their discontent and concerns about the implications of the Act.

The protest rally at Hatta which was participated by men, women, students and elders practising Islam faith commenced from Golapati Centre Point and culminated at Golapati Public Ground.

The demonstration was organised by Joint Organising Committee Hatta Golapati.

Rallies decry Waqf (Amendment) Act

The protesters marched with placards bearing messages such as "Reject WAQF (Amendment) Act", "Save Masjid Madrasa Kabristan", "We Condemn WAQF (Amendment) Act and Racial Policy of the Centre", "Repeal WAQF (Amendment), Act 2025" .

They also chanted slogans against the WAQF (Amendment) Act, expressing their opposition to the legislation.

Tight security measures were taken up at the protest site to maintain law and order.

Speaking to the media on the sideline, convenor of the organising committee Haji Arafat Ali stated that amending the Waqf Act to oversee properties donated to Allah is unacceptable to them.

Saying that Waqf (Amendment) Act is unconstitutional, he urged the Government to repeal the legislation which has been assented to by the President.

A similar protest rally was also held at Kshetrigao.

The rally at Kshetrigao began from Kshetrigao Aba Ground, passed through Top Thong and Kongpal Thong and culminated at Aba Ground.

Kshetrigao MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan also participated in the rally.

Meitei Pangal community in Manipur has been protesting against the legislation since the past few days.
