Spadework starts ahead of Nationwide 2027 Census exercise

Pre-census work is underway in Manipur with a deadline for completion by December 31, 2025, in preparation for the 2027 Nationwide Census.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, a senior official of the Directorate of Census Operations Manipur stated that the pre-Census activities commenced on June 16, following a Gazette notification issued by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner.
He said that the reference date for the Census exercise is March 1, 2027.Saying that the State's Home Department is the nodal agency responsible for overseeing Census operations in Manipur, he mentioned that they are communicating with various departments to ensure effective coordination.
The official further stated that the State's Home Department has also issued a Gazette notification for the Census exercise in Manipur on July 1, 2025.He added that internal preparations among departments have also commenced, given the magnitude of the Census operation.
Furthermore, the Registrar General of India has instructed all States to finalize their administrative boundaries by December 31 this year, making any necessary adjustments, the official said and maintained that the Census operation, originally scheduled for 2021, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stating that the number of enumerators required for Manipur hasn't been finalized yet, he maintained that the number of enumerator blocks will also be determined during the pre-Census operations.
More than 6,000 enumerators were engaged in the 2011 Census in Manipur, with about 80 per cent covering rural areas, the official said and maintained that the number of enumerators for the upcoming Census is unlikely to decrease.
He also said that conferences and training programmes will be organised to make the 2027 Census exercise successful.
The official stated that the 2027 Census will be conducted digitally, unlike the earlier ones which were done manually.
Continuing that the first phase of the Census, which includes house listing, is being planned to begin on April 1 next year, he maintained that population enumeration, on the other hand, will be done in the second phase.
The official urged citizens to submit accurate reports, stating that the information gathered during the Census exercise will be of utmost importance.
He added that the data collected during the Census will be instrumental in planning the country's future, providing insights into socio-economic status, living conditions, literacy rates, and more.
