Lamdeng solid waste plant to generate power

Imphal, January 10 2015 : At a time when final test of Solid Waste Management Plant set up at Lamdeng Khunnou in Imphal West is being conducted, a plan has been made to generate 1 megawatt of power from the solid wastes produced by the same plant.

The lone Solid Waste Management Plant of the State was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 41.75 crore.

Highly-placed sources said the final test of the plant has been on trial for the last almost 35 days.

The test is to be carried out for three months continuously.

To ensure smooth functioning of the plant, engineers from Ramki Enviro-Engineer Limited, a private firm based in Hyderabad have been roped in the final test of the plant which is keeping a target to produce 60 tonne of solid wastes a day.

After the test is conducted successfully, a plan has been also set to convert 50 percent of the solid wastes produced from the plant into fertilizers meant for providing to farmers who need them.

There would be a test to ascertain the actual content or the components of fertilizers to be made of 50 percent of the solid waste.

After the test, the results would be sent to competent laboratory so as to verify the findings in a couple of days.

After the verification conducted at the laboratory, a report would be ready within 15 days.

There is also a plan to sell the fertilizers to farmers who need the same at a subsidized rate through the Private-Public-Partnership (PPP).

However, since those who would be engaged in the task have not been identified, the fertilizers obtained from the Solid Waste Management Plant would be made available with the concerned department.

Sources further added that after extraction of the fertilizers from the waste, 25 percent of the remaining 50 percent would be used to produce power.

Under this arrangement, there will be an effort to generate 1 megawat power per day.

It has been reported that there were companies which were keen on applying for the venture.

However, the power generated by the companies has to be purchased by the government.

It was also learnt that under a condition, the government would purchase 1 kwh at the rate of Rs.6 .

The proposed condition has been forwarded to the government for an onward approval.

If the government agrees to the proposal, production of power from solid waste will soon see the light of the day.

It may be mentioned, that the foundation stone of the project was unveiled in 2009 by the then Works Ministers K Ranjit and PDA chairman Dr.Kh.

The size of the Solid Waste Management Plant is 58.38 acres.

Earlier, the estimated cost of the plant was put at Rs.28.98 crore.

However, due to essential additions as deemed required, the cost was increased to Rs.41.75 crore.
