Khurai relief camps running low on resources

The relief camps at Khurai which are hosting many victims of the recent violence are reportedly running out of resources due to lack of Government's aid.
It may be noted that thousands of people from Imphal East's Pukhao, Ikou, Dolaithabi, Litanpokpi, Nongshum and Moirangpurel villages and Saikul in Kangpokpi district who were rendered homeless following attacks by armed militants are taking shelter at various relief camps opened in Khurai and other localities.
The Government is yet to officially open these victims in Imphal East nor has extended any form of assistance to the already opened relief camps.
Notably relief camps opened in and around Khurai are hosting around 530 victims under the auspices of Joint Committee Relief Camps, Khurai Sajor Leikai.

Speaking to this reporter, secretary of the committee Konsam Victor expressed concern over the depleting resources and lack of Government's assistance.
Victor stated that the people taking refuge at these centres are in deplorable conditions with most of them having fled empty handed.
Many of them are still wearing the same clothes which they were wearing when they arrived.
Moreover many also are in need of medical attention and medicines, he said.
Thanks to the donations of the locals, these camps are able to meet other requirements but lack of medicine is still a concern, he said.
He went on to state that it is very unfortunate that the State Government has not been able to open up shelter or relief centres to help these displaced people even days after the incidents.
The relief centres being opened up may also run out of resources in the coming days and as such the Government should do the needful, he added.
Taking note of the heavy exchange of fire between security forces and militant groups of a community at Ikou and other villages neighbouring Kangpokpi, Victor maintained that such incidents will continue and hinder rehabilitation process until proper security arrangement is made.
