Moirang, September 05 2022: One commando personnel sustained injuries in the eye as bandh supporters and police confronted each other on Tiddim Road today.

Notably, the JAC Against the Missing of Md Achouba Buyamayum called a 24 hour bandh on Tiddim Road with effect from September 4 midnight.

The JAC has been demanding the Government to find the whereabouts of Md Achouba Buyamayum who went missing after he reportedly went to Ukhrul on August 12 .

As a large number of people blocked Tiddim Road at Kwakta Bazar, Terakhong, Pangal Lamkhai, Sericulture Farm etc, many vehicles heading towards Churachandpur were stranded at Tronglaobi and Phougakchao Ikhai.

The bandh supporters put timber and bamboo across the road apart from burning tyres on the middle of the road.

Taking serious note of the situation which was becoming volatile, a strong police force including women personnel tried to bring the situation under control.

However, the situation grew more volatile prompting the police personnel to fire several rounds of tear gas shells and smoke bombs.

The bandh supporters retaliated with slingshots and by pelting stones.

This resulted in a violent confrontation between the two sides.

The situation grew even more volatile after police rounded up 11 bandh supporters.

In the meantime, the bandh supporters continued to attack the police team using slingshots and one commando personnel was hit on the eye with a projectile.

The injured commando personnel was rushed to District Hospital Bishnupur but he was referred to Imphal as his condition was said to be critical.

Enraged by the incessant attack, the police personnel opened several rounds of fire to bring the situation under control.

At around 2 pm, Moirang AC MLA Th Shanti, Bishnupur DC L Bikram and Bishnupur SP N Herojit initiated a meeting with some representatives of the JAC at Kwakta Terakhong.

The meeting was aborted midway before any solution could be worked out as a large number of bandh supporters rushed to the meeting venue.

In the meantime, the bandh supporters and the police personnel were engaged in a pitched battle.

While the police fired tear gas shells, the bandh supporters used slingshots.

Later another meeting was held at the office of MLA Th Shanti at Moirang Philem Leikai and this time, the JAC and the Government representatives somehow arrived at an understanding and the bandh was lifted.

JAC member Islauddin Phundreimayum said that the bandh was imposed urging the Government to find the whereabouts of Md Achouba Buyamayum.

He said that Md Achouba of Kwakta Charangpat went missing since August 12 .

During the meeting held at the initiative of the Moirang AC MLA, the Government representatives assured that the JAC's demands would be addressed positively.

Subsequently, the JAC resolved to end the bandh.

Islauddin said that the JAC's proposed 48 hours State-wide bandh on September 7 and 8 has also been called off.

Nonetheless, the JAC will launch different modes of agitation if the assurances given by the MLA, the DC and the SP are not translated into action.

The JAC also handed over a certain amount to the Bishnupur SP in presence of the MLA for treatment of the commando personnel who sustained injuries on the eye.
